Frequently Asked Questions
What kinds of projects do you work on?
Anything involving fish.
For more than 15 years I've worked on many kinds of projects. My clients include brands, publishers, conservation groups, scientists, restaurants and anglers around the world.
My work includes:
- Editorial illustration
- Scientific and educational illustration
- Packaging design
- Apparel graphics
- Logo design and branding
- Icons and infographics
- Books and magazines
- Murals
- Restaurant interiors and environmental graphics
- Maps and interpretive signage
- Original paintings and commissioned artwork
If your project involves fish in any way, I can probably help.
Do you only create illustrations?
No. Illustration is the main part of what I do, but it's rarely the only thing I deliver.
I'm also an experienced graphic designer, and I have a background in UX design. That mix means I don't just make one image. I also think about how the artwork fits into a product, a brand or a digital experience.
I've designed packaging, logos, icons, infographics, murals, restaurant interiors, exhibitions and digital files for websites and apps.
I enjoy helping clients build one clear visual style across everything they show their customers.
How does the commission process work?
Every project starts with a conversation. I want to understand what you want to achieve, who the audience is, and where the artwork will be used.
Then I start drawing in one of my sketchbooks. I try out ideas with quick, rough drawings. I test different compositions, stories and directions.
Once we agree on a direction, I develop that idea into a more finished black-and-white drawing. Working without colour lets us focus on composition, anatomy and design before we go further.
Only after you approve the drawing do I add colour, texture and detail. Then I refine the final artwork and prepare it for its use.
This step-by-step approach keeps the work collaborative. It also helps us make the right decision at each stage.
Can you work with clients outside Europe?
Yes. Most of my clients are based outside Spain. Over the years I've worked with companies across Europe, North America, Japan and Australia.
I work remotely all the time, and distance has never been a problem for a successful project.
How much does a project cost?
Every project is different, so I don't use fixed prices.
Once I understand your brief, I'll send a clear proposal. It will describe the scope, the timeline and the cost. If you already have a budget, I'm happy to plan an approach that uses it well.
How long does a project take?
The time needed depends on the size and complexity of the project.
A single illustration may take a few days. Branding, packaging or larger commissions can take several weeks. If you have a deadline, tell me early. I'll always be honest about what's possible.
Can you create scientifically accurate illustrations?
Yes.
I've worked on scientific illustrations, educational publications and conservation projects. In this work, anatomical accuracy is essential. I also create more expressive artwork for brands and collectors.
Can you work from photographs?
Yes.
Clients often send photographs, scientific references or rough sketches to start. I also draw from my own large library of reference photos and from years of watching fish outdoors.
What files do you deliver?
It depends on the project. I can provide print-ready artwork, vector files, files for websites, and production-ready files for manufacturers and printers.
Can I license existing artwork?
Yes.
Besides commissioned work, I have an archive of existing illustrations. Some of these may be available to license. This can be a faster option for some projects.
Do you sell original artwork?
Yes.
Collectors commission many of my paintings. Sometimes an original piece becomes available. Please get in touch if you're interested.
Do you fish yourself?
Yes.
When I learned to walk, I took a fishing rod and went to the nearest river. Those early days by the water gave me two lifelong passions: fishing and drawing.
While I waited for a fish to bite, I filled sketchbooks with fish, birds, insects and everything else along the riverbank. I still watch nature the same way today, and it shapes how I work.
How many sketchbooks have you filled over the years?
Hundreds. Too many to count.
Drawing has been part of my daily life for as long as I can remember. Almost every project starts in one of my sketchbooks. They're full of fish studies, wildlife notes, design ideas and experiments.
They're not precious. They're working tools. Clients see the finished artwork. The sketchbooks are where I think.
Don't you ever get tired of painting fish?
No.
Fish have everything I love to draw. They combine elegant shapes with very complex details: reflective scales, see-through fins, subtle colour changes, wet surfaces and endless textures.
Every species has its own character, its own anatomy and its own way of moving through the water. Capturing those differences is what keeps the work interesting.
After all these years, I still notice details I've never seen before.
Do you only draw fish?
No.
Fish are my speciality and the work I'm best known for. But they're not the only thing I draw.
During my career I've created illustrations for global brands, including Puma, Philips, Adidas and The North Face. These projects ranged from apparel graphics and editorial illustration to branding and packaging.
I specialise in fish because it combines my passion and my skill. It's not the only thing I can draw.
